City of San Gabriel

City of San Gabriel is named after the Mission San Gabriel Arcanghel, founded by Junipero Serra, the city grew outward from the mission and in 1852 became the original township of Los Angeles County. City of San Gabriel was incorporated in 1913, the city's motto is "A city with a Mission", and its often called the "Birthplace" of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. 
City of San Gabriel, is located 11 miles east of the Los Angeles Civic Center, adjacent to the communities of Alhambra, San Marino,Temple City and Rosemead.
A general law city under the laws of the State of California, City of San Gabriel follows the council manager form of management. Home to population of more than 42,000 on its 4.09 square miles with a diverse population of Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, and other ethnic group.
Strong municipal services and specialized programs, such as one-stop development permitting and redevelopment assistance distinguish San Gabriel as one of the region's leading communities.  History of City of San Gabriel
It is consider as the "Birthplace" of the Los Angeles Region - is a unique, special place. Events that have taken places in San Gabriel for 238 years, and the kaleidoscope of peoples and cultures who have called San Gabriel home, have shaped our community into a rich, fascinating modern city. Diversity is not a new to San Gabriel, from its earliest days, it has been a place for peoples for different cultures, beliefs, and values to come together. The community was created by Father Junipero Serra and Gabrielino-Tongya Indians together they build a magnificent Mission in 1771, located in the mid-west portion of the City, which is known as the San Gabriel Mission District. San Gabriel opened its doors to people of all races and cultures. One of the community's greatest strengths is its diversity. This enduring and rich history have allowed the City to grow with pride, vision and imagination. By 1852, after American occupation, San Gabriel become one of the first townships in the County of Los Angeles. In 1860 census was taken,there were only 586 persons listed. The city was incorporated as a City on April 24, 1913 with a population of 1,500

 Ethnic Culture
The city boasts a mixture of Asian, European, and North American cultures, second and third generations Chinese Americans patronize its diverse array of stores and eateries. There is the 12-acre San Gabriel Square mall, sometimes referred to as the "Chinese Disneyland", it was also nicknamed by the Los Angeles Times as "the great mall of China". The stretch of exotic Chines shops and bold architecture, with roofs of Spanish-style tile, is the model for the new ethnoburbs recently recognized in places like Las Vegas and Houston. The conglomeration of restaurants and cafes, shops, markets,hair and nail salons, Asian video stores, health services, department stores, plus an extensive jewelry mart, provides "something for everyone", from purchasing an expensive diamond and shopping for designer suits, to buying soy milk or a travel package to Las Vegas or China.
