Brief History of Duarte...
Andres Duarte and his wife were granted around 7,000 acres of land in the upper San Gabriel Valley. He named his estate "Rancho Azusa de Duarte". By the mid-1800s, most of the original land had been sold in order to pay off debts. Dr. Nehemiah Beardslee, one of the purchasers began the first school  in Duarte and founded the first water lines. In due course, all the land was sub-divided and sold off into individual lots. The community grew over the years. By 1957, many of the Duarte inhabitants desired incorporation and it was officially incorporated on August 22, 1957.
